The Captain- Joe
Originally from small town Newfoundland, I've always been around water. Sailing, on the other hand has come later in life. We always had a typical 22' wooden speedboat that we used mostly for Cod jigging for a winters worth of fish. Those days are gone and life has brought me on a different path, but I try to always be near water. I started sailing ,taking a course through CYA, now called Sail Canada, several years ago at CFB Trenton, Ontario. Jim, my instructor took me and the other students through our lessons onboard his 28' Sirius in the Bay of Quinte, Ontario. In my military career, I worked on fixed wingaircraft; Hercules transports, C-17 Globemaster, plus Labrador Search and Rescue, Seaking and Griffin Helicopters. I'm now retired from the Air Force, but my years of service were in CFB Borden, ON, CFB Trenton,ON, CFB Shearwater, NS and CFB Gagetown,NB. I was an Aircraft Structures Technician with the rank of Sergeant.
We retired on Grand Lake, NB and I continue taking several courses to make sure we are ready to sail on an extended basis and to do it safely through RYA, Sail Canada and CPS . We are members of Fredericton Yacht Club with locations at Douglas Harbour and Fredericton, but hope to spend most of our time away. I was previously the Commodore for the Trenton Yacht Club, and am now Past Commodore of FYC for the second time. It takes a lot of people to keep things running and a team to get things done. I am also the guy in charge of making sure our boat is always working well mechanically, all the boat's ongoing maintenance, and purchasing needed (and unneeded) equipment.
I'm inquisitive by nature and have to get around the next corner to see what is there. We are currently going to get out to see as much as possible in our new sailing grounds and hope to complete as much as possible. We enjoyed getting out and seeing some of the Saint John river, Washademoak, Belleisle Bay, Shamper's Bluff, Big Cove, Mount Creek, Flower's Cove, Middle Island and our mooring at Douglas Harbour in Grand Lake, NB. These will be our sailing grounds, venturing around the East Coast. We were also lucky enough to sail in the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario and Kingston, ON areas. We never got to see as much as we wanted when we had the boat in Halifax, NS due to boat refits, but we will be back. In the summer of 2021, we took the boat from North Hero Marina, down the Champlain Canals, to the Hudson, down the Atlantic to New Brunswick. I'm certainly getting a chance to satisfy my curiosity and look forward to this years travels.
