The Skipper- Suzanne
Hi, I'm Suzanne!
In a nutshell I'm a retired Chef, mother and animal lover, but really there is a lot more to me than that, as with everyone. I love, love, love cooking....most anything. I've worked in both savoury and sweet kitchens. Here in Fredericton, NB I worked at Chess Piece Patisserie, a very popular and growing business. Who doesn't love a little sweetness in their day? When I was in Ontario, I was the Head Pastry Chef for The Waring House, in Prince Edward County. I also love expanding my cooking knowledge and chose Italian. Dinkels and Paulos Italian Trattoria was a fantastic choice and place to learn.... Mmmmm. But, I have not always worked for others. When we lived in Halifax, NS, we owned a small waterfront cafe. Soups, sandwiches, treats, and great coffees and teas; all fair trade and organic, of course. Now retired, my newest challenge....gardening; I'm loving it! Next, I'm a mother. Joe had 3 kids when we met, and I have 3 of my own, so, that's a big blended family. They are grown now, and live between Halifax, NS to Cobourg, Ontario. I am also the mom to 2 Yorkshire Terriers and a bi-coloured tabby cat. I never knew I was a cat lover till this little girl arrived and completely stole my heart. <3
Joe and I have moved around quite a bit during his career and I have been fortunate enough to see, work and build friendships in many beautiful places. One thing I have learned from this is the lack of importance of material things, that society pressures us all into feeling we "need" to be accepted as having "made it". I am looking forward to living smaller! I don't mean living with nothing, but rather living comfortably, with less. It's amazing the things you don't need, that we feel we can't do without. The very things that tie you to working forever to pay for. Military moves helped us realize that many of the things we moved around the country, from house to house, are things we just don't need at all. Also, I realize small spaces are harder. Organization, planning and patience, especially with each other are the things that are now vital, not a "new car". I am ready for new challenges, learning and making memories of a lifetime. We hear too many stories of people settling into the daily routine (rut) and realizing life has quickly gone by without doing the things you've wanted to do.
Of course I realize that this is a difficult lifestyle we choose. I, like everyone, fear uncertainty. I will be out of my comfort zone at times, it is more difficult to do daily things, and life now revolves around weather. I love weather, especially clouds. The focus will be doing what I know in my new space. I love to putter around in "my very tiny" galley figuring out the best way to provision and cook real, non-processed foods to keep my crew happy and healthy. Boat cooking and provisioning for trips can be quite a challenge and I'm hoping to share with you some tasty recipes that are practical, yet delicious, and easy to prepare while on the hook or a marina. I am fortunate enough to have married an adventurous soul who has introduced me to a different way of life. I'm looking forward to travelling, learning and growing with him, collecting knowledge and memories along the way!
So, I welcome you aboard and thank you for following our adventures! I hope you enjoy our posts, videos and pictures as much as we enjoy sharing them with you all! That's a little about me! Cheers and Happy Sailing!! :)
