Its been a LOOOONG winter hasn't it?
I don't know about you, but Joe and I have certainly felt a little gypped on our sailing season last year. Granted, we knew it would be short with the posting back to Ontario and I am very thankful to be close to my family once again, but I can't wait to get back out on that water! There is something very peaceful and relaxing about sailing (most of the time anyway) when you are able to cut the engine and let the wind fill the sails and just feel it push you across the sparkling water. Far away from the traffic and the hustle and bustle of the city. Obviously I'm not a racer right? No need for a rush of adrenaline pumping through my veins, NOPE! Unless it gets really gusty where we encounter some unforeseen storm, then sure, we deal (and we have) but we DID buy a Bayfield here.... they are not exactly known for their speed or racing capabilities. They are however, a very safe and spacious little boat for a weekend getaway and that's exactly what we intend to do!
As with all trips, a little planing is needed. I spent the day today at the boat cleaning her up. Joe spent the afternoon installing lifeline netting so our fur babies Harley & Lucy would be safe if they decided to explore the upper decks. Harley is usually content enough to stay put in the cockpit, on a very comfortable blanket and keep his eyes peeled for falling snacks, but Lucy LOVES the water, so I am a bit worried about her jumping off! The first time she experienced water was in Douglas Harbour, NB where she ran right off the dock. All Joe and I heard was a small "Plop" sound! My poor little baby! Do you think this mishap has slowed her down any with frolicking around in or by the water though...ummmm NO! Thus the netting and they both have life jackets as well of course. This is a picture of her just after her rescue.
My little drowned rat...<3
Initially we planned to go to Kingston and motor sail around the Thousand Islands for the long weekend but due to the time restraints (four days) we decided that the trip to Kingston might just be a little too...well, aggressive. In the future and with a bit more time off perhaps we will revisit this idea, but for now Its on to Plan B....
Plan B is simply to relax, enjoy ourselves. Don't rush. We are sailors after all... and just slowly meander through the Murray Canal and out to Presqu'isle. From there maybe visit North Beach, Sandbanks, oh, I don't know... Wherever the wind takes us I suppose and all the little picturesque places in between!
