July 15, at 04:30 we headed out of North Hero Marina. A nice start at 5-7 knots of wind and fair. Now, we all know the weather man lies, and they did. We hit a cold front and it turned to fog and the wind picked up to 15-20 knots in the middle of the lake. The mast cradle we had built started doing the two step aft and Mike was sent back to tighten the rig down to keep it aboard. Extra rope was used as well as his body to hold it in place. The rest of out trip was uneventful and we motored our way through Lake Champlain and entered the river system. Eventually we did get ourselves through the lake and ended our day at Chipman Point Marina in Orwell, VT. We tied up on the dock and went to hunt down the owner. Luckily, we were almost in place as we had tied up by the fuel dock; after we had topped up on diesel and water, we walked her down one slot for our berth for the night. This is a friendly private marina, and a very pretty place to stay. It is definitely worth a stop if you are in this area.It is $1.50/ft and free showers, laundry and internet (decent). We settled in, did a couple loads of laundry, talked to some people visiting and fired up the BBQ for a little supper. The wind had picked up some, but it was good to be done our first day heading for home. The rest of the evening was spent with a few tasty beverages and was an early night.
